Following graduation, Monaghan moved to Chicago to pursue a degree in journalism, before pursuing modeling. Models have also appeared in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore in addition to the United States. With one semester remaining to finish her journalism degree in 1999, she departed for New York to pursue an acting career. Before becoming an actor, she was model and was featured in numerous magazines and catalogs. Monaghan's two first television credits, both as a secondary character, were in episodes of Young Americans in 2000. Her second appearance on television was in Law & Order: Special Victims Unified in "Consent" that first aired on the 19th of January 2001. Monaghan also made her big screen debut in Perfume that year in the role of Henrietta. In 2002, she appeared again in a supporting role in Unfaithful in which she starred Richard Gere & Diane Lane.
